GOVERNOR'S LAW ENFORCEMENT ACCREDITATION COMMISSION
WHEREAS, the Rhode Island Select Commission on Race and Police Community Relations has recommended that all state and municipal law enforcement agencies become accredited - a certification process that assists law enforcement agencies in establishing and maintaining uniform standards of excellence and accountability; and
WHEREAS, uniform and statewide minimum law enforcement standards as well as increased police accountabil-ity will improve the quality of police,services in Rhode Island.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lincoln Almond by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Rhode Island hereby order as follows:
1. There is hereby established a Rhode Island Police Accreditation Commission.
2. The Commission shall make recommendations to establish, implement, and maintain a consistent set of minimum standards for all state and municipal law enforcement agencies.
3. The Commission shall consist of eleven (11) members, appointed by the Governor, as follows: four (4) representatives of state and/or municipal law enforcement agencies; two (2) representatives of civic/interfaith and/or community service organizations; one (1) representative of a college or university that offers courses in the field of criminal justice or sociology; one (1) representative of the Rhode Island Fraternal Order of Police; one (1) representative of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers; one (1) member of the House of Representatives and one (1) member of the Senate.
4. The Accreditation Commission shall present its recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly on or before May I, 2002. This Executive Order shall take effect immediately upon the date hereof.
