STATE OF DISASTER EMERGENCY DUE TO OIL SPILL

WHEREAS, a disaster due to a severe oil spill off the coast or Rhode Island exists and continues; and

WHEREAS, there is an imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, and irreparable harm to wildlife, shellfish, fish, critical natural habitat and sensitive eco-systems, as well as the potential of contamination of food stuffs affected by the spill and the loss of property and other monetary loss; and

WHEREAS, the health, safety and natural resources of the people of Rhode Island are endangered thereby.

NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the authority vested in me under the Constitution of the State of Rhode Island and R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 43-3-28 and 30-15-9 it is hereby Ordered as follows:

1. A state of disaster emergency is hereby declared for the areas affected by the oil spill off of the coast of Rhode Island.

2. The State's emergency operations plan shall remain in effect; further, and more specific, orders, rules and recitations may be issued as needed.

3. This executive order shall have retroactive effect to 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 19, 1996 and shall continue in effect until I find that the threat of danger has passed or that the disaster has been dealt with such that emergency conditions no longer exist.
