STATE SUPPORT FOR PDBLIC LIBRARIES

WHEREAS, the State of Rhode Island has long affirmed its support for public libraries, in both its services to the public and its support of library facilities; and

WHEREAS, for more than 30 years the State has provided significant financial assistance to Rhode Island's public libraries in building or renovating facilities to serve local communities; and

WHEREAS, in 1991 the State ceased funding for any new public library construction projects; and

WHEREAS, State support of public libraries is a sound investment in the future of Rhode Island; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize this valuable community effort during National Library Week.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Lincoln Almond, Governor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, hereby order the following:

1. The Office of Library and Information Services in the Rhode Island Department of Administration shall reinstate the program of state aid for public library construction and capital improvements as specified in Rhode Island General Laws, Section 29-6-6.

2. The Office of Library and Information Services shall prepare rules and regulations for promulgation.

This Executive Order shall take effect immediately upon the date hereof.
