July 3, 1995 TO THE HONORABLE, THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: In accordance with the provisions of R.I. Gen. Laws §43-1-4, I am transmitting herewith, with my disapproval, 95-H-6342 Substitute A, "An Act Relating to Hotels -Businesses and Professions." This legislation gives innkeepers the right to eject persons from or refuse to admit them to hotel property for certain enumerated offenses. It also limits innkeeper liability for valuables deposited in hotel safes to $500 unless the innkeeper provides a written agreement to be responsible for amounts in excess of $500. I support the goals of this legislation because it will improve our hotel and tourism industries, both critical to the State's economic vitality. This legislation is, however, unnecessary in light of the passage of similar legislation, 95-S-981 Substitute A, "An Act Relating to Hotels, Housing and Innkeepers," which I have today signed into law. For this reason, I disapprove of this legislation and respectfully urge your support of this veto. Sincerely, Lincoln Almond Governor |
