June 26, 2002

TO THE HONORABLE, THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:

In accordance with the provisions of Rhode Island Gen. Laws § 43-1-4, I am transmitting herewith, with my disapproval, 2002- H 8067, "An Act Relating To the Naming of Route 95 in Rhode Island."

This bill would name Interstate Route 95 within Rhode Island, in its entirety, "The Purple Heart Trail."

Unfortunately, this Act is in conflict with an Act I signed into law in 1999, which named Interstate Route 95 the "AMVET Highway." After consultation with the sponsor of this bill, I have decided that the best course of action is to veto this bill, and ask that in the next session of the General Assembly the legislature move to designate Interstate Route 95 in Rhode Island as part of the national Purple Heart Trail, rather than rename it. This way we may honor all of our veterans, including our distinguished Purple Heart recipients.

For the forgoing reasons, I disapprove of this legislation and respectfully urge your support of this veto.

Sincerely,

Lincoln Almond
Governor
