July 3, 2001 TO THE HONORABLE, THE SENATE:

In accordance with the provisions of Rhode Island General Laws § 43-1-4, I am transmitting herewith, with my disapproval, 2001-S-0995 As Amended, "An Act Relating to the Chariho Regional School District."

This bill calls for a special election in the Town of Charlestown on the issue of the Town of Charlestown remaining as a member of the Chariho Regional School District.

This bill was introduced and passed by the General Assembly in support of a Council Resolution passed by the Town of Charlestown. Subsequently, the Council indicated that they no longer support this version of the bill and the sponsor has requested a veto. It should be noted that the Council has indicated their preference for House bill 2001-H-6510 As Amended to serve as legislation to enable the special election in accordance with their resolution.

For the foregoing reasons, I disapprove of this legislation and respectfully urge your support of this veto.

Sincerely,

Lincoln Almond
Governor
